Musical Journeys: A Day at the Pond / Mausam

An enchanting series of short films culminating in a live performance featuring the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and South Asian Arts-uk.

Musical Journeys: A Day at the Pond / Mausam is a brand new, multi-part digital musical resource for early years children.

Featuring an ensemble from Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) and South Asian Arts-uk and narrated by Seetal Kaur, children can immerse themselves in music and dance through the world of the pond.

The digital resources can be delivered as a stand-alone package in an early years setting or can be combined with a live OAE TOTs performance to deliver a full creative package. The resources support young children to effectively prepare for and enjoy the live performance as well as creatively exploring music and environmental themes in their own setting.

Digital Resources

The digital resources include:

  • Five bitesize films
  • A fully illustrated resource pack including creative activities for different age groups
  • A scheme of work that links to the early years curriculum
  • A group of settings can also request a training session to introduce the project and musical material.

The films included are designed to introduce musical concepts to young viewers through an enchanting storyline written by Hazel Gould, enabling children to explore life at the pond at an enjoyable and comfortable pace. Learning resources guide teachers, practitioners and anyone who works with early years children in using the films to support creativity and music-making in their setting.

The resource is also a wonderful way for early years settings to creatively explore:

  • Music
  • Dance and movement
  • Different cultures
  • Environment
  • Science

Children loved it, were very engaged.

Background

Musical Journeys: A Day at the Pond / Mausam is a partnership project developed with AMP Music, OAE and SAA-uk. The suite of digital resources was created in 2021, with partners drawing on expertise in live early years music delivery and exploring the musical synergies of different musical traditions. In many rural areas, accessing live orchestral music for children is challenging due to geography and cost. The resources allow early years settings to bring the musicians into their place to enhance their children’s musical experiences.

Building on the digital resources, partners developed a live performance in 2024. The digital resources enable settings to enhance their music delivery and develop children’s familiarity with the artists. This allows them to gain the most out of attending a live performance.

Musical Journeys is co-produced by AMP, Orchestras Live, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and South Asian Arts-uk.
