Press release: Britten Sinfonia and young musicians lead audiences on creative trail around Norfolk at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival
NewsNews Story
All day Saturday 21 May culminating 6.00pm – 7.00pm at Festival Gardens, Chapelfield, Norwich
Local young musicians will join forces with professional musicians from the Britten Sinfonia to lead audiences on a musical journey from the sea to the city.
Throughout the day, small ensembles will appear at several locations across Norfolk in a creative trail of free live performances at Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and Norwich, culminating with a massed, open-air concert in Festival Gardens, Chapelfield. The concert will feature the world premiere of Time and Tide, a new work specially composed for the occasion by Pete Letanka.
Co-produced by Norfolk & Norwich Festival and Orchestras Live in partnership with Norfolk Music Hub, composer Pete Letanka has taken inspiration from Norfolk’s heritage of migration and connections with other countries and communities for the piece.
Time and Tide can be performed by different combinations of instruments in small ensembles, as well as in a larger ‘orchestral’ format with all the ensembles joining together.
The new piece Time and Tide that we’ve commissioned with Norfolk & Norwich Festival from composer Pete Letanka, gives the opportunity for young musicians from Norfolk to rehearse and perform alongside the world class players of Britten Sinfonia. We hope this kind of skill-sharing and artistic experience will inspire the young people in their musical journeys as the next generation of young creatives for our country.

Britten Sinfonia
In 1992 Britten Sinfonia was established as a bold reimagining of the conventional image of a chamber orchestra. A flexible ensemble of some of the UK’s leading soloists and chamber musicians came together with a unique vision: to collapse the boundaries between old and new music, to collaborate with composers, performers and guest artists across artforms and genres; and to create involving, intelligent music events that both audiences and performers experience with an unusual intensity.
Britten Sinfonia is an Associate Ensemble at the Barbican in London and Resident Orchestra at Saffron Hall, has residencies in Norwich and Cambridge and performs a chamber music series at Wigmore Hall. The orchestra has a busy international touring schedule, appearing throughout Europe, the USA and Asia and its 2018 performance with The Sixteen at the Sistine Chapel reached more than a million people worldwide.
